While images of bitter political debates among college students capture the public imagination, many of us find ourselves facing a different challenge: classrooms filled with students who resist our ongoing and varied efforts to engage them in conversation. This session will review contemporary data on college students' perspectives and habits on dialogue and discussions and review specific classroom strategies that respond to these conditions. Considerable time will be reserved during the session to discuss participants' specific challenges and brainstorm where and how particular strategies might be incorporated into Spring 2026 courses.
